COVID-19: a new lens for non-communicable diseases

This Lancet’s editorial focuses on the noncommunicable diseases and the impact of COVID-19 on people affected by NCDs. While healthcare provision and routine interventions were severely affected by the pandemic and resulted in dramatic disruption of care for NCDs-affected patients, is there also other risks that are worth underlining?

A modelling study published in The Lancet Global Health suggests that, worldwide, one in five people are at an increased risk of severe COVID-19 should they become infected, mostly as a result of underlying NCDs.

It sounds like a double penalty and may require targeted policy responses. The call is for policy makers to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on NCDs through health, nutrition, social protection and other relevant policies.
